Description

1888 N338-2 S.F. Hess Bill Brown SGC Poor 1 - Only Three Graded Examples! Decades before baseball had Yogi Berra, there was William "Big Bill" Brown. To his teammates, Brown was an entertaining personality who played first base and catcher. His seven-year career lasted from 1887 through 1894. It seems Brown played hard but also toyed with opposing players through little pranks that messed with their heads. Historian David Nemec in his book Major League Player Profiles: The Ball Players Who Built the Game, Vol. 1, wrote, "the big redheaded backstop would also play on a batter's nerves by pretending sotto voce to side with him in protesting an umpire's questionable strike call." Just like Berra. That is where the comparison ends as Berra is still famous decades later where Brown is but an unknown.

His obscurity would be even worse had he not made it into the N338-2 S.F. Hess series which showcased the New York Giants of 1888. Overall, this is an extremely rare edition. This card is a recent discovery and totally new to the hobby! Including this card, there are just a total of three graded examples confirmed in SGC and PSA holders combined. Presentation quality is that of a typical mid-grade card. The rating is due to areas of surface loss experienced to the blank back of the card. If one is putting the set together, condition is a moot point but even though it's labeled Poor it does display well in the SGC slab. Graded SGC Poor 1.
