Description
1880's Henry Chadwick Signed Cut Signature, PSA/DNA EX 5. He's one of the most influential figures in the early adolescence of our national pastime, a man who used his soapbox as a cricket reporter for the 1850's New York Times to rally interest in the nascent sport: "Americans do not care to dawdle over a sleep-inspiring game, all through the heat of a June or July day," Chadwick wrote. "What they do they want to do in a hurry. In baseball all is lightning; every action is as swift as a seabird's flight." He'd also play the role of the sport's clergy at a time when moral authority was truly needed, speaking out against the gambling and drunkenness that ran rampant in those early years. And his partnership with fellow early pioneer Albert Spalding was essential in standardizing the rules of the game through Spalding's Official Base Ball Guides.A quick review of the Heritage Auction archives will confirm that the presented signed cut signature is the first Henry Chadwick autograph we have ever offered, which should speak volumes as to its rarity. Penned in black steel-tip fountain pen on what appears to be part of a blue mailing envelope, the autograph has been awarded a grade of EX 5 by the experts at PSA/DNA. Encapsulated by PSA/DNA, EX 5.
