Description

1887-90 N172 Old Judge Clark Griffith (#201-2) SGC Poor 1. From the John Esch collection. "The Old Fox" began his lifetime association with baseball in 1888 as a pitcher for the Milwaukee Brewers/Creams and remained faithful to the game for over 60 years. His career debut came with the St. Louis Browns in 1891, eventually becoming a player-manager for various teams until 1920. That same year he became owner of the Senators, a title he held until his death in 1955. When the American League was formed in 1901, Griffith was one of the first players to join the new league. He rewarded the Chicago White Sox by winning 24 games, helping to earn the newly-formed team their first pennant. Pose: #201-2 Strike, looking at approaching ball. Caption: GRIFFITH, P., Milwaukees. Graded SGC Poor 1. Photo quality: Close to excellent.
