Signed 1954 Topps Hank Aaron Rookie #128 PSA EX-MT 6, PSA/DNA Auto 10 - Pop Five, Two Higher! UPDATE: Any qualified bidder wishing to make a straight bid (a direct bid higher than the next available increment) on this lot may do so by emailing the bid request to JasonS@HA.com. The bid request email must include your HA Customer Number, the Lot Number, and the Straight Bid Amount. The 1954 MLB season is remembered for many things. The St. Louis Browns moved to Baltimore and became the Orioles. The Cleveland Indians recorded a league-best 111 regular-season wins and won the AL pennant. The New York Giants won the World Series by sweeping the Tribe in four straight and Willie Mays recorded one of the greatest catches in World Series history. But the major league debut of future Hall of Famer Henry Aaron, the man who would become known as "Hammerin' Hank," also took place.
Aaron, at just 20 years old, took his first swings in the big leagues and began his trek which would eventually include surpassing Babe Ruth's longstanding record for career home runs some 20 years later. Aaron's record-breaking 715th round-tripper took place on April 8, 1974, and would be followed by another 40 home runs before he retired after the 1976 season. Steady as the day is long, Aaron honed his craft masterfully and began accumulating home runs season after season at an average of 33 bombs over the course of 23 years in the majors.
Offered is Aaron's treasured 1954 Topps rookie card. That year, Topps featured bright background colors on its cards with a central, portrait-style image of the featured player accompanied by a smaller black-and-white action photo. A large team logo and facsimile autograph rounded out the card-front design. Aaron's heralded #128 rookie is a beauty and remains one of the hobby's most sought-after first-year issues.
This particular example, however, boasts yet another level of collectability to it. Not only is this Aaron's rookie but it features a beautifully scripted autograph from the man himself. The legend who walloped 755 home runs signed his name in bold blue marker across the bottom. For anyone collecting autographed rookie cards of Hall of Famers, this is quite simply a must-have addition to the collection. Graded PSA EX-MT 6 with an autograph certified and graded PSA/DNA Auto 10. One of only five autographed cards graded EXCELLENT-MINT with only two rated higher.
NOTE: This auction lists each item in this set as an individual lot along with another listing for the complete set. If the aggregate winning bids of the individual lots exceeds the winning bid of the complete set, the items will be sold to each individual winner. If the winning bid of the set exceeds the sum of the winning bids of the individual lots, the high bidder for the complete set will be the winner.
