Description

1965 Sandy Koufax Signed Baseball Used in Game in Which He Became Single-Season Strikeout King. You cannot beat the provenance of this ONL (Giles) ball, which is personally inscribed by the Hall of Fame pitcher to the plate umpire Bob Engel, reading, "To Bob, Thank you for a great game, Sandy Koufax." Engel's neat block-lettered text appears on an adjacent panel, reading, "Plate Umpire, Sept. 25, 1965 - Dodgers vs. St. Louis - Dodger Stadium. Koufax struck out 12 to break season strike out record of 346 set by Bob Feller in 1946 - Att. 31,532."

The ball exhibits marvelous game use. Koufax' inscription is a bit faded at 5/10, while Engel's text is perfectly bold. The superstar southpaw would close out this game with 356 K's for the year, and then throw a baker's dozen in each of his two subsequent regular season starts to finish at a soaring 382. Nolan Ryan would edge him out by a single strikeout in 1973, but this Cy Young, Pitching Triple Crown, World Championship season remains one of the greatest in Major League history.
