Description
2001 Yankee Stadium World Series Game Used Pitching Rubber. It was arguably the most thrilling Fall Classic of its hundred-plus editions, with three of its seven games concluding in dramatic walk-off fashion. Two of those last-ditch heroics belonged to the boys in pinstripes, but it was the D-Backs who accomplished the feat in the winner-take-all Game Seven, earning baseball's most coveted trophy. But in a World Series jam-packed with unforgettable action, the 2001 edition might be best remembered for an absolutely perfect first pitch just prior to the start of Game Three, thrown by President George W. Bush as snipers kept watch from the roof of the House that Ruth Built and smoke still rose from the wreckage of the World Trade Center a few miles to the south. The Yankees would win all three games in the Bronx as Derek Jeter was crowned "Mr. November" and a grieving nation--and particularly the residents of the Big Apple--finally found a reason to cheer.
Not long after the end of the season, the playing surface of Yankee Stadium underwent a major renovation and this pitching rubber was exhumed from the mound as a souvenir for a close friend of the Yankees organization.
The rubber is filled with cement and weighs a hefty fifty-three pounds (53 lbs.), and exhibits solid wear from the center of the unforgettable action that late October and early November of 2001. A black sharpie inscription on the surface reads, "2001 postseason, New York Yankees, Dan Cunningham, head groundskeeper, 11/16/01." Nearby are the black sharpie signatures of the top three pinstriped aces of that team--Roger Clemens, Andy Pettitte and Mariano Rivera. Signatures average 8.5/10.
