Description

1954 Dan-Dee Potato Chips Mickey Mantle PSA Mint 9 - None Higher! Practically untouched and in immaculate condition, this card can be described as one of the finest early-1950's Mickey Mantle appearances as recorded on any census report. This is not just another example of a nationally issued and easily recognizable gum card. The smiling portrait does more than just convey what the Yankees hero looked like. Caught in mid-chuckle, the face exudes that all-American ideal we seek in our heroes. His is a glance of confidence and charm. His naïve smile has yet to fully comprehend the profound impact he will have on a generation of young and old alike.

Any kid from any state could own a Bowman brand gum card of Mantle in the summer of '54. No one would have the chance to continue the two-year run Topps afforded gum chewing baseball fans. To ease the emptiness left by Topps, Dan-Dee Potato Chips produced a 29-card incentive to buy potato chips, as if any were needed. Dan-Dee saw fit to include the Yankees star and heir apparent to the Ruth/DiMaggio crown.

Graded PSA Mint 9. This card is one of seven at the Mint 9 level with none higher. A prophetic population total if there ever was one. Thankfully spared from contact with greasy chips, this specimen is outshone by none among the 380+ submissions to Topps. By comparison, almost 1,500 '52 Topps Mantle cards have been validated. Heritage last sold PSA 9 examples in 2012 and 2018. The census numbers have not changed. Mantle's portrait is centered close to perfection; colors are saturated; edges scream vintage factory processing. A card that earns the right to be the pinnacle of any Mantle collection.
