1914 B18 Baseball Blankets Near Set (178/184). B18 Baseball Blankets are an incredible fun and satisfying to collect. They break a collection out of the rectangle shaped hum-drums and thanks to a line-up that includes the eras finest and the wonderful color schemes they truly add a significant level of desirability and talk-ability to one's collection. The checklist is complete at 90 different players but adding infield, pennant and base path color variations one has 201 individual blankets to pursue. Like so many other promotions from this era, anything approaching a complete set is rarely made available at auction. The 5-1/4" felt squares were meant to be stitched together to form a pillow or blankets and naturally this use all but ruined them for future generations. Finding high grade examples are a treat and this presentation has an abundance of high quality examples and is by far the nicest and most complete set presented at auction.Highlights include: Carey/Purple (EX/MT), Carey/Red (EX), Chance/Green (EX), Chance/Blue-Brown (EX/MT), Cobb/White (EX/MT o/c), Cobb/Brown (EX s/t), Gandil/Green (NM), Gandil/Red (VG, paper on back), W. Johnson/Green (EX/MT), W. Johnson/Red (EX), Jackson/Purple (EX/MT), Huggins/Purple (EX/MT), Huggins/Yellow (GD), Maranville/White (EX), Maranville/Brown (EX), Stengel/Blue (EX-), Stengel/Green (VG), Bobby Wallace/Red (EX/MT), Wallace /Purple (EX/MT), Wheat/Green (GD, sewing holes) and Wheat/Blue (EX/MT). Missing - Bauman/Brown Infield, Chance/Yellow Pennants-Blue Infield, Griffith/White Infield-Red Pennants, Jackson/Yellow Pennants, O'Neill/Red Pennants, Sallee/Yellow Pennants. About a dozen still have remnants of the original wrapper on the reverse as well as folds as issued. Overall this is mainly a EX to NM assembly (about 10-12% would be considered lesser) of well-kept now over 100-year old collectibles. It's so nice to be able to present not just impressive quantity but quality as well.
