Description

1909-11 T206 Piedmont 350 Christy Mathewson (Dark Cap) PSA NM-MT 8.5 - Pop One, One Higher!
In the rough and tumble Dead Ball Era of our national pastime, when the sport was populated by brawling drunks and illiterate farmhands, Matty was recognized almost as much for his gentlemanly comportment as he was for his remarkable Hall of Fame abilities. As commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis famously eulogized the fallen baseball hero, "He was an inspiration to everybody, and may we have more of his kind." The 373-game winning right-hander appears here in his pitching prime, the three-season production span of the hobby's most popular tobacco issue finding Big Six averaging twenty-six victories and 158 strikeouts annually with an earned run average at a microscopic 1.70.

It's a clear tribute to Matty's popularity that he is honored three times within the T206 issue, and this Platinum Night auction provides top-tier examples of two. This is the Dark Cap variety, the second-finest example ever submitted to leading card grading service PSA. Only this specimen has garnered a NM-MT+ 8.5 rating, which trails a single Mint 9.

We struggle to identify any deviation from its state as it emerged from a pack of Piedmont cigarettes over a century ago, as the corners remain sharp enough to cut glass and the surfaces clean of any distractions. It is likely only the slightest westward shift of the image area that denies a "Finest Known" assessment. This is certainly one of the most desirable condition-rarities of the tobacco era.
