Description

1892 James J. Corbett Photograph Signed the Day He Defeated Sullivan! A bloodied and beaten John L. Sullivan stood at the ring apron that early September day at New Orleans' Olympic Club and graciously addressed the fans. "All I have to say is that I came into the ring once too often," he spoke, "and if I had to get licked I'm glad I was licked by an American." Later that day, the American to which he referred, new Heavyweight title holder Gentleman Jim Corbett, signed this incredible photograph for a friend, almost surely the only Corbett autograph on any medium that can be dated to this monumental event in boxing history. The strong (8/10) black ink inscription reads, "To my old friend Jim Horne, with best wishes from Jas. J. Corbett, Champion of the World, Sept. 7, 1892." Ink is even stronger than it appears in catalog imagery, but encounters competing contrast toward the end of the inscription. A few vertical creases traverse about half of the height of the photograph of Corbett in a bare-knuckled fighting pose, though these do very little to detract from the tremendous eye appeal. Image measures 6.5x10" in size, with professional matting and framing bringing the final dimensions to 12.5x17". One of the most significant events in 19th century athletics, the day that saw the fall of the once-invincible John L. Sullivan is on an historical par with the day Ruth hit his sixtieth, or Wilt scored his hundredth. Imagine what a signed photograph dating to those events would be worth, and then remember that this one is decades older than either of them. LOA from PSA/DNA.
