Description
1910 E102 "Set of 25" Christy Mathewson PSA NM 7 - Pop Two, Highest Grade Known! "He was an inspiration to everybody and may we have more of his kind," spoke a doleful Kenesaw Mountain Landis at the 1925 memorial service for the future posthumous Hall of Fame inductee. "His sense of justice, his integrity, and sportsmanship made him far greater than Christy Mathewson the pitcher." Though baseball's first Commissioner had been recruited by Major League Baseball to ferret out its worst in the midst of the 1919 Black Sox scandal, Landis was able to recognize the game's best as well, properly honoring this shimmering diamond in the Dead Ball Era rough. It was a sentiment shared by essentially every player, teammate or adversary, which ever encountered Big Six on the playing field. It is only fitting that this card serves as representative of an entire class of card collectibles. The E102 has always had a passionate following posing quite a challenge to those who insist on completion. This glorious portrait of a man captured doing what he was born to do resonate with hobbyists thanks to a full palette of hues, precise composition and a superior expression of majesty and history. Mathewson serves as one of most desirable components within the E102 roster. The offered card has been graded PSA NM 7. We could go into a lengthy paragraph of positive attributes but we ask you treat yourself to the large images we provide to realize there is nothing that contradicts the PSA assessment which is based on the centering. PSA has reviewed over five hundred E102 cards, only seven have graded NM or higher. Of the 29 Mathewson cards, this is one of two that have graded NM with none higher.
