1934 American League All-Star Team Signed Baseball. The All-Star Game had been imagined in 1933 as a one-time event to draw further attention to the Chicago World Fair, but the remarkable consolidation of baseball greatness on a single diamond proved such a rousing success that a tradition was born. Though the American League team, memorialized here, would claim the nine-to-seven victory at the Polo Grounds edition in 1934, it was home-park hero Carl Hubbell of the defeated Senior Circuit who would provide the most compelling storyline of the afternoon. After allowing the first two batters of the game to reach base, the Hall of Fame southpaw would strike out five fellow Cooperstown immortals in succession: Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Al Simmons and Joe Cronin.
Each of those victimized legends is counted among the cast of signers here on what appears to be an OAL (Harridge) ball due to the remnants of a circular "Reach" logo on one panel--the rest of the stamping is too far gone to see. However, the autographs generally fare far better: Ruth (7/10), Cochrane (4/10), Dickey (2/10), Gehrig (6/10), Gehringer (6/10), Foxx (7/10), Averill (5/10), Simmons (7/10), Walter Johnson (6/10), Cronin (4/10), Ruffing (2/10), Manush (3/10) Ferrell (2/10). Twenty-one signatures in total.
