1970 Topps Baseball Complete Set (720) - #2 Current Finest on the PSA Set Registry. In 1970, Topps set out to produce its largest set to date. The result was a 720-card behemoth. In addition to base cards of all the day's superstars, popular subsets included League Leaders, National and American League Playoffs, World Series and All-Stars. The set also featured the return of team cards to the Topps lineup. Highlights included the Yankees Rookies card #189 featuring Thurman Munson, and a large selection of future Cooperstown inductees. The high-numbered cards (#553-720) are among the more difficult pieces in the collection, as that run included many of the year's stars, including Johnny Bench, Al Kaline, Willie Mays and Nolan Ryan. For the condition-conscious collector, the exasperating Topps quality control that resulted in so many centering issues was met with the added challenge of silver-gray borders that were more prone to show edge and corner wear than its white-bordered predecessor. As is the case with most Topps issues of the late 1960s and early 1970s, the cards are frequently found off-center or miscut, sometimes even with pronounced tilts and front snow.
Presented is one of the finest 1970 Topps Baseball collections in the world. Collectively, they represent the #2 Current Finest set on the PSA Registry achieving a rating of 9.41. This high-grade masterpiece is highlighted by 200 PSA Gem Mint 10 cards and several more graded PSA Mint 9 with none higher. The complete breakdown is:
PSA Gem Mint 10 (200 cards);
PSA 9 Mint (469 cards);
PSA Near Mint + 8.5 (11 cards) and
PSA NM-MT 8 (40 cards).
