Tyrus Raymond Cobb was at the apex of his considerable powers in 1911 and was about to experience the greatest decade of any player since. His league-leading numbers that season are staggering: .420 average, 248 hits, 47 doubles, 24 triples, 127 RBIs, 83 stolen bases! Despite his vicious temperament that likely kept him out of the running other seasons, the American League had no choice but to crown him Most Valuable Player, the only season he was honored as such. Look closely at the image of the Peach, painted close to a century ago, and you can see it in his eyes.
