1874 Harper's Weekly Full Page Featuring the Philadelphia Athletics Team. The National Association's Philadelphia Athletics squad won their first championship in 1871 which was the team's first season. Presented is a full page from the July 25, 1874 issue of
Harper's Weekly. Each wood cut rendering are images derived from a photo session at Philadelphia's "
Suddards & Fennmore" studio (credited in Caption) which was just the fourth season of the club's existence. Most notable among the players represented are Adrian "Cap" Anson and Al Reach (not imaged here), the team's star shortstop and outfielder respectively, who would each properly earn enshrinement in the Baseball Hall of Fame for his early service to our National Pastime. Anson would end his career with 3,000+ career hits, Reach, at age thirty-four, was nearing the end of his playing career and would soon turn his full attention to founding his sporting goods company. The balance of the players represented in surprising detail are Joe Battin, John Clapp, Wes Fisler, Count Gedney, Dick McBride, John McMullin, Mike McGeary, and Ezra Sutton. Our offered page measures approx. 11' x 16" with supple paper quality and just mild toning to the 152-year-old relic. Tears and chipping affect the top and bottom edges. The caption reads "International Base-Ball-The Philadelphia Athletics.
