1889 G50 Duke Sons & Co. "Shadows" (N87) Tobacco Banner. Right or wrong... you just can't help but like this set. From the treasure trove of options 19th century tobacco card collectors have, one set that has huge following is the 1889 "Shadows" 50-card series produced by W. Duke, Sons & Co. designated "N87" in the American Card Catalog. Each card title is the name of an animal. The animal is depicted merely as a shadow (this the name) along right in the background. The shadow is created via a highly stylized portrait making full use of exaggerated features plus hats and/or clothing that "form" an animalistic shadow as if they are being visible on a wall. Think of hand shadows only with people's faces. The set is about as tongue-in-cheek as they come (like the enter illustration of a gentlemen who confidently feels he is a stallion as seen in the shadow to his right) but truthfully the illustrations rely of negative racial stereotypes. We make no judgements, as this was the attitude of the era as some are subtle, but a handful take it to the extreme. Copy alerts consumers that the cards can be found in packs of Duke's "Turkish Cross Cut Cigarettes." Being the only example, we are aware of, the once rolled banner shows multiple horizontal creasing and is now professionally mounted with no signs of any restoration. Overall outer dimensions are 20" x 36."
