Description:
1960 The Masters Par-3 Championship Trophy Tea Set Won by Sam Snead. He was famous for his prodigious drives, but you don't become the most decorated golfer in PGA Tour history without a fair share of finesse as well. It has now been over a half century since the tradition of a tournament on the 1,060 yard par-3 course at Augusta turned the Wednesday before the Masters into a fan favorite, and here we find the prize issued to the very first winner. Sam's son Jack reports that this was his mother's favorite of all of his father's trophies, and that it resided for years on the center of a table in front of the fireplace at their Virginia home.

Most important here is the large (17x24") silver tray that bears the details of the achievement, as engraved text around a central Augusta logo reads, "Sam Snead--First Place, Par-3 Contest, April 6th 1960." The accompanying pieces bear no physical attribution to the links legend but are stamped with matching "Reed & Barton" hallmarks, and include two different tea pots, a creamer and two different sugar bowls, one lidded, one not. There is some scratching of the tray's surface from years of use, and the lid of one of the tea pots has broken loose from its hinged (easily repaired), but the overall aesthetics are barely affected. A particularly rarity, not only as the first Masters Par-3 prize, but also due to the fact that the winner's award was changed to a crystal bowl after a few years. We've never seen another offering. Letter of provenance from Jack Snead.
