Description

1949 Bobby Locke Signed Original Artwork. Arthur D'Arcy "Bobby" Locke, was born in South Africa in 1917. Locke was always regarded by many as one of the ten top golfers in the history of the game, and is still generally acknowledged as being the game's finest putter. In 1957, Locke won his fourth British Open - only a few golfers, such as Harry Vardon and Tom Watson, have won more Open titles.

The portrait of Locke being offered was painted by John Archibald Alexander Berrie (b. 1887.) It is bust length and depicts Bobby in a South African blazer and tie. It was painted after Locke's successful win of the 1949 British Open at St. George's Sandwich, when he beat Harry Bradshaw in a 36 hole playoff by 12 strokes with rounds of 67 and 68. Purchased at auction from the Bobby Locke family through Christie's, July 9, 1993. Signed lower left John A. Berrie and autographed upper left Bobby Locke; oil on canvas 24x31". Framed dimensions 32x37". Fine condition. Lot derives from the Philadelphia Private Golf Museum.
