Description:
1898 "Old Tom" Morris Signed Check. Old Tom Morris was golf's first impresario. He was the foremost player of his day winning four British Open Championships 1861-1867. He was also among the finest ball and clubmakers; and he was also a prolific and fine architect. His early career was at Prestwick, but in 1864 he moved on to St. Andrews where he would spend the rest of his life, passing away in 1908. This exact item, a cheque for 800 pounds, gave him outright title to the building and shop on Links Road in St. Andrews that bears his name to this day. In an award-winning book on Old Tom published in 2008, this cheque is pictured with the history relating to its significance. Signed boldly, a wonderful example. Check exhibits two vertical storage folds which do little to distract the eye, otherwise no flaws of note. LOA from Mark Emerson. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication.
