Sourced from the family of a former Jets team owner

1965 Joe Namath Original Painting by LeRoy Neiman. For nearly half a century, LeRoy Neiman has enjoyed the distinction of being the most famous practitioner in the sports art genre, but his recent passing has only served to intensify interest in his work, further strengthening his already red-hot market. Evidence of the iconic artist's rising stock can be found in our own Permanent Auction Archives, which features no fewer than three six-figure sales of his unmistakable impressionistic style. Absent is any sign that this trend is leveling off, a fact that has not gone unnoticed by those collectors with an eye toward investment potential.

Though he captured all manner of sporting competition on land and sea, traveling the world in pursuit of athletic excellence, Neiman was a true New Yorker at heart and his Big Apple subjects are widely considered his most desirable. Here we encounter just such a piece, a marvelous study of a rookie quarterback out of Alabama who would soon author the greatest underdog tale in the city's athletic history. From the chaos of Neiman's swirling paintbrush derives perhaps the finest Namath portrait ever created, a premonitory celebration of the greatness to come. Neiman's signature at lower right is dated, "'65," the year Namath was claimed with the twelfth pick of the NFL draft.

The 15.5x8" oil on board was recently sourced from the family of a former Jets team owner who almost certainly commissioned the work in celebration of his exciting new acquisition. Little could he have predicted the soaring trajectory, with both artist and subject bound for immortalization in the sporting pantheon. Painting is housed in its original museum quality frame that concludes the dimensions at 20x12.5".
