Ball boys are one of the few outsiders allowed in basketball's most inner sanctum. James Shorter served as a ball boy and helped in the capacity of visiting locker room attendant for the Detroit Pistons from 1988-93. He enjoyed a bird's eye view of the Bad Boy teams which won back-to-back NBA titles. The likes of Larry Bird, Isiah Thomas, Scottie Pippen, Joe Dumars and Michael Cooper were just some of the men who the youngster called friend during his association with the organization. Heritage Auctions has the honor of offering some of Shorter's personal treasures, given to him by NBA stars of the 1980's.
Before Michael Jordan took sports marketing to a global level, Larry Bird and Magic Johnson got it going. In the mid '80's, Magic vs. Bird was the centerpiece of Converse's advertising campaign. Bird wore black Cons while Magic sported the colorful yellow, white and purple kicks.
Bird was a Cons endorser the rest of his career. Sourced from former Pistons ballboy James Shorters are these Bird gamers. The black leather shoes were used by Bird in the late 1980's and coincide with Shorters' affiliation with the Pistons. We have found a Getty Images photo (53032680) of Bird wearing a similar style of shoe, namely the "Cons ERX-400" reference on the tongue. Both shoes show outstanding multiple game use. Bird signed both on the inner heel in blue sharpie. Also included is a wristband worn by Bird during game competition. The inner orthopedics have been removed. Letter of provenance from former Pistons ball boy. LOA from Heritage Auctions. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA (autographs).
