Description:
1892 The Triangle YMCA Magazine Introducing Basketball. Presented is the first and only example we've ever encountered of the seminal publication that introduced the sport of "Basket Ball" to the world. Published just a month after the first game was played in December 1891, this January 1892 issue of the YMCA's The Triangle magazine announces the article on the cover, which directs the reader to page 144 and the historic understatement, "We present to our readers a new game of ball, which seems to have those elements in it which ought to make it popular among the Associations." James Naismith's four-page article includes a fine drawing of that first game, his list of the thirteen Original Rules and fascinating insights into the sport's early development, such as, "There seemed to be no way of compensating the opponents for a foul made. A free throw was thought of, but, after a little practice, a good thrower could convert it into a goal almost every time..." Did you hear that, Shaq? The magazine exhibits some chipping at the edges of the cover and the upper right corner of several of the pages, but the basketball section is unaffected and the magazine remains complete and tightly bound. As the very first and unquestionably the most important published work regarding the sport of basketball, the appeal is difficult to measure. And, as this is the only known example of the magazine in private hands, the estimate we provide is little more than a conservative guess. Please note that after the catalog went to print we were contacted by a collector who has a copy of this magazine, bringing the known population to two.
