1948 "The Babe Bows Out" Full Ticket from Ruth's Final Yankee Stadium Appearance. The moment is documented in one of the most famous sports photographs ever created, Nat Fein's Pulitzer Prize-winning study of mortality and immortality. Just two months before terminal cancer claimed the greatest name in American sports, Babe Ruth accepted his heartbreaking final ovation on the ground where he had transformed the game of baseball, and directed the New York Yankees upon its trajectory to the pinnacle of American sport. In his first appearance at his House, the Babe christened the ground with a game-winning home run, but on this date his mighty bat had been transformed into a cane, and his number "3" pinstripes fluttered against his gaunt frame.Here we present the only known unused ticket from that sold out event in the Bronx marking both the retirement of that jersey and the Silver Anniversary of the House that Ruth Built. Though over sixty thousand flooded the Stadium for a last glimpse at the once mighty Bambino, the known population of stubs from the event could be counted on a single hand. This, however, is not one of them, but rather the sole entry in the census of unused models. The rather unassuming appearance of the ticket, lacking any mention of the historic proceedings, certainly didn't help its chances at survival, but the "Yankees - Cleveland, Sunday, June 13, 1948" printed on the face luckily caught the attention of one well-informed modern collector.
The khaki-colored relic resides within a "PSA Full Authentic" capsule, the header trumpeting, "1948 N.Y. Yankees/Jun. 13, 'The Babe Bows Out' #3 Retired, Yankee Stadium 25th Anniv." A few wrinkles snake vertically through the center of the historic artifact, joined by a couple corner bends, but the visual effect is minimal and must be entirely excused on this population-one occasion. Factoring rarity and historical importance, this could quite possibly be the most desirable post-war baseball ticket on the face of the Earth.
