Description:
Early 1910's Jack Coombs Game Worn Philadelphia Athletics Jersey, MEARS A9. ADDENDUM: It has been determined that the offered jersey actually dates to Coombs' rookie season in 1906. The Spalding manufacturers tag on the offered jersey dates to 1905-06 and not 1911-13 as it was initially labeled. The MEARS grade remains an A9 and the updated year will be reflected on the LOA.

It would be a natural assumption that the arms leading the way to the World Championship for the mighty Mackmen in 1910 and 1911 belonged to its Hall of Fame duo of Eddie Plank and Chief Bender, but in point of fact it was the man who wore this heavy white flannel jersey that topped the stat lines during that era of dominance. In both of these campaigns, Colby Jack outshone not only his iconic rotation mates but the entirety of the American League in victories.

The numbers are simply staggering. In 1910, Coombs went thirty-one and nine with thirteen complete game shutouts, an American League record that stands to this day and thus remains as safe in eternity as any in the sport. His fifty-three consecutive scoreless innings that September still stands as fourth best in MLB history. In the 1910 World Series against the Chicago Cubs, Coombs pitched three games in six days, winning all of them including two head-to-head battles with Mordecai "Three Finger" Brown. His encore 1911 stats were only slightly less gaudy, Coombs again leading the Junior Circuit with twenty-eight victories and winning his only decision in that year's Fall Classic, a eleven-inning three hitter to victimize the great Christy Mathewson.

Presented is the uniform style utilized by that first great Philadelphia Athletics dynasty, a classic design worn at the height of Connie Mack's first great dynasty. It was recently unearthed in Maine, where Coombs lived as a youth and attended the college that earned him his Colby Jack nickname. It survives in remarkably strong condition with scattered minor staining and expected fading and minimal loss to the blue felt logo "A" over the heart the main distractions. A couple of the buttons at the collar appear to be later replacements as well. Interior collar holds the proper small "Spalding" label, with a white embroidered "Coombs" just below perfectly matching the few known exemplars from this A's era.

Sourced with the jersey is a matching pair of white flannel pants, but the "Wright & Ditson" label at interior waistband suggests derivation from a different uniform. It nonetheless would serve as a fine companion to the jersey for display purposes. LOA from MEARS, A9. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
