Description1997 Derek Jeter Game Worn New York Yankees Jersey. When Derek Jeter stops wearing a number two pinstriped jersey they'll stop making them. The eventual retirement of Jeter's jersey is as certain as death and Yankee World Championships. Not since Mickey Mantle has a player been so instrumental, so adored, and so perfect for the shark tank of New York City sports that not even the most mean-spirited writer for the Post or News could find a bad word to say. "This kid, right now, the tougher the situation, the more fire he gets in his eyes," manager Joe Torre explained early in Jeter's Bronx tenure. "You don't teach that." His clutch fielding exploits are so memorable as to be defined with simple terms known to any fan. The Flip. The Dive. His clutch Fall Classic hitting crowned him Mr. November.
Here we find a picture-perfect representation of an early career home gamer, sported at the shortstop position in the Old Stadium the season after Jeter earned the illustrious American League Rookie of the Year Award. The time-tested, no-frills Yankees design of navy blue "NY" logo over the heart and numeral on the back is interrupted only by the application of a Jackie Robinson Golden Anniversary patch on the right sleeve, remembering the brave racial pioneer. "Russell Athletic Diamond Collection [size] 46" labeling appears at lower left front tail, with flap tags indicating "100% Polyester" and "2" Extra Body Length," and a "Jeter-97" strip tag to the right.
Wear is quite strong, certainly far superior to that which one typically encounters with Jeter jerseys. It could be hypothesized that the young shortstop wore far fewer jerseys per season in those early years before his superstar status was firmly established. A 10/10 blue sharpie signature on the front utilizes the rare and desirable "Derek Sanderson Jeter" full name format, and a "Steiner" authenticating sticker resides nearby (corresponding COA is included). A second 10/10 signature on rear numeral is applied in silver sharpie, and reads "Derek Jeter ROY 96." LOA from Heritage Auctions. LOA from Steiner Sports (autograph). Full LOA from PSA/DNA (autograph). Full LOA from James Spence Authentication (autograph).
