Description:
1977 Ozzie Smith Minor League Game Worn Jersey. "This Was The Beginning! What Memories! Good Luck! Ozzie Smith," reads the 10/10 blue sharpie inscription on the upper right shoulder of this humble pullover knit gamer, issued to the twenty-two year old Wizard as a member of the Walla Walla (WA) Padres of the Northwest League. A year later, on April 7, 1978, Smith would make his debut as shortstop for the Major League San Diego club, and the rest, as they say, is history. The provided gamer from the infancy of Smith's professional career convincingly mimics the styling of the Big League club, with "Padres" applied in brown and yellow script to the chest along with a number "32" in the same tackle twill. "Smith 32" is announced from the rear. Dual "Sand-Knit" tagging in the tail regards San Diego Padres exclusivity and "Size 40." A "76" year swatch to the left suggests that the jersey was held over from the previous season, as Smith was a fourth round pick by the Padres in the 1977 draft. Heavy wear is evident throughout but the shirt still presents wonderfully. A stupendously rare pre-Major League Hall of Fame jersey for the collector who has everything. Included is a signed letter from Raymond Peralta, former Padres equipment manager, attesting to the authenticity of the jersey. LOA from Lou Lampson.
