Description:
1976 Minnie Minoso Game Worn Chicago White Sox Jersey. The Cuban-born superstar got his Big League start at age twenty-three with the 1949 Cleveland Indians and retired with the 1964 Chicago White Sox. Or did he? After several years of Mexican ball, Minoso returned to the ChiSox to play three games, picking up one single in eight at-bats to become at fifty years of age the second-oldest player (after Hall of Famer Jim O'Rourke at 54) to hit safely in the Majors. He would return for a single 1980 appearance to become the only man to play Major League ball in five different decades. Here we present the jersey Minnie was wearing to record his final hit in 1976, a so-awful-it's-cool style that appears on every uniform expert's favorite or least-favorite list. The massive collar is pure Disco, an odd contrast to the Old English "Chicago" spanning the chest. "Minoso 9" is applied to verso. Interior collar holds "Rawlings [size] 42" label. A name written inside the collar belongs to a 1981 ChiSox minor leaguer, clearly sent down as most Major League jerseys were for years. There a nameplate was affixed over the top of Minoso's name, and the signs of that nameplate removal are clearly evident. Included is a letter of provenance signed by Minoso that reads, "This is the uniform I wore on Sept. 11, 1976 when I batted in the game between the White Sox & Angels. I became the only player to ever play in 5 decades in the major leagues 1949-80. While wearing this uniform I had 1 hit at the age of 53!" Jersey is signed and dated by Minoso at upper right chest in 9/10 sharpie. LOA from Heritage Auctions. Letter of provenance from Minnie Minoso. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA (autograph). Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication (autograph).
