1973 Tom Seaver Game Worn New York Mets Jersey from Cy Young Season, MEARS A9.5. "Terrific" doesn't even begin to describe the offered garment, a Cooperstown-quality jersey worn on the mound at Shea Stadium during one of the most dominating pitching seasons in post-war history. The superstar right-hander led all National Leaguers in 1973 with a microscopic 2.08 earned run average, eighteen complete games and 251 strikeouts, claiming his second of three career Cy Young Awards. His team-leading nineteen regular season victories were essential in claiming the top spot in the National League East by one and a half games, and an eventual National League flag, the second to take to the winds over Flushing, Queens.

The classic pinstriped home model is the team's most distinctive style, with blue and orange tackle twill "Mets 41" applied to the chest, and those digits repeated on verso. As is typical of most Mets jerseys from this era, the degree of fading to the numerals outpaces that of the team nickname, an oddity we must stress is not indicative of any restoration--the jersey remains 100% original and unaltered. MEARS makes note of the fading, which accounts for their sole deduction, a half-point. Team logo patch remains affixed at left sleeve, and interior collar holds embroidered swatch announcing size, year and jersey number: "44 73 41." Lower right front tail is tagged "Rawlings [size] 44."

In over seven decades of Hall of Fame voting, Seaver's appearance on 98.84% of the ballots (425 of 430) in 1992 rates highest of all 297 members currently enshrined. The events of the 1973 season bear significant responsibility for such a landslide. And the lofty grade of the presented garment once again finds Tom Terrific where he belongs, at the top of the heap. LOA from MEARS, A9.5.

Tom Seaver career highlights.
