A near-perfect specimen from the Hall of Famer and US Senator

1970 Jim Bunning Game Worn Philadelphia Phillies Jersey, MEARS A9. Second only to Walter Johnson in career strikeouts when he retired from the game in 1971, Bunning is honored by the Phillies franchise as one of just seven men (though Klein and Alexander were pre-jersey numbers) to have his digits retired from the team wardrobe. Here we provide the rarest of opportunities to view that fabled number "14" on a genuine Phillies gamer, worn by Bunning during his penultimate season in the Majors and his sixth of seven in the City of Brotherly Love.

The home white pinstriped flannel exhibits solid wear from Bunning's final triple-digit strikeout campaign, though a faded handwritten name at interior collar suggests a degree of the use derives from secondary farm club action. This standard farm club use accounts for the sole point lost in MEARS' A9 rating. Red and white chenille forms the logo "P" and number "14" applied to the chest of the garment, with the digits similarly applied to verso in larger format. A swatch sewn at interior collar announces "Bunning" in black chain stitching. Similar embroidery at lower left front tail supplies "44-70 Set 2" just below a "Wilson [size] 44" label.

Bunning provides his own seal of approval to the shirt on the chest, which he signs in 10/10 blue sharpie, adding the notation, "My Gamer, HOF 96." Bunning has proven to be a major obstacle to collectors of Hall of Fame flannels for years, with just a single (Pittsburgh Pirates) representation surfacing on the public auction block in the twenty-first century. As such, we expect quite a battle when this Phillies model is opened for bidding. LOA from MEARS, A9. Full LOA from James Spence Authentication (autograph). Full LOA from PSA/DNA (autograph).
