1917 Clarence "Pants" Rowland Chicago White Sox World Championship Pin. It's been theorized that the greatest thing that happened in Pants Rowland's baseball career, after earning the World Championship prize presented here, was getting fired by the skinflint Comiskey midway through the 1918 season. The partnership ended with such acrimony that Rowland might otherwise well have taken the poisoned bait in 1919 and fallen into baseball ignominy. But let's concentrate on happier times, embodied by this historic little bauble issued to Rowland for his role as manager of the last White Sox World Championship team for the eighty-eight years to follow.

This pin was the official award presented to the team by Comiskey, the period equivalent of the Championship ring, and identical to those earned by Shoeless Joe and the other future conspirators. A single quarter-karat diamond is set in the face of the pin, encircled by raised text announcing "World's Champions 1917, White Sox." Verso is imprinted "F&H Co., 14K" and engraved with the name "C.H. Rowland."

The pin was later fashioned into a watch fob by the addition of twin clasps attached to verso. One length of chain attaches to a deer tooth that bears an engraved monogram and presumably the hunted deer's weight in pounds (297) upon the mount. The other length of gold chain attaches to nothing. The pin retains its nut and bolt and could easily be restored to its original condition if desired. We quite like Rowland's modification, however.

While any Dead Ball Era Championship jewelry carries enormous appeal, there's something particularly special about this White Sox squad, brilliant and doomed. Only a small handful of these 1917 pins have emerged into the collecting market, and this specimen from the man at the reins is arguably the most noteworthy of the bunch.
