Description:
1911 Detroit Tigers Imperial Team Photograph. Simply outstanding silver gelatin image was undoubtedly the proud possession of a team member of major VIP, as the cost of producing a 14x20" image such as this during the age of the William Howard Taft administration would have been prohibitively large for a print run of any significant size. The second clue pointing to the importance of the piece is its spectacular condition today, with nothing more than very minor "silvering" of the emulsion to suggest over a century of life. One will always seek out the legendary Ty Cobb in any early twentieth century Tigers image, and you'll find him seated in the second row at far left, just three men down from Hall of Fame manager Hughie "Eeh Yah" Jennings. Fellow Cooperstown resident "Wahoo Sam" Crawford sits at the opposite end from Cobb. As is typical for early team studio images such as this, the players are dressed in semi-formal attire rather than their Tigers gear, but this only adds to the wonderful period aesthetic. Certainly one of the largest and best preserved team shots we've ever encountered from the rough and tumble Dead Ball Era. Matted and framed to 22x27". Third party shipping required.
