Description:
Circa 1956 Stan Musial Game Used First Baseman's Glove. Though he's best remembered as the greatest offensive threat of the National League post-war game, reaching fourth on the career hit list with a staggering 3,630, it shouldn't be forgotten that The Man was no slouch with the leather either, recording 3,730 outs (exactly 100 more than his hit total) in his defensive role. The season of 1956, the probable vintage of the provided first baseman's mitt, was just the second year of Musial's transition from the outfield to the infield, yet his .993 fielding percentage as a first sacker was second only the the Braves' Joe Adcock, besting even the Bums' perennial All-Star Gil Hodges.

"The Glove Collector" newsletter author Joe Phillips provided assistance in the authentication of this rare gear, confirming the professional quality of the "Rawlings TM50" model and the 1955-57 potential range of production, which he further narrows to a likely 1956. A sticker affixed to the glove reads, "Stan Musial 9-25-56," likely applied by the new owner when The Man gifted the well-worn leather four days before the end of the season. Years later the glove was presented to Musial for examination and he confirmed its origin, adding "My glove" to his 8/10 blue sharpie autograph.

Leather is quite stiff after years of storage, with minor chipping on back of pocket, but otherwise the glove presents wonderfully and stands as one of just three Musials to reach the hobby's auction block in recent years. LOA from Joe Phillips.
