Description:
Stunning prize links the sport's two greatest hitters
1957 Ted Williams "Babe Ruth Sultan of Swat Award" Crown. Baseball royalty doesn't get more regal than the pair of long ball artists linked by the gorgeous artifact presented here. Properly proud of its status as the birthplace of Babe Ruth, the State of Maryland supplies the trophy cases of the sport's greatest sluggers with what is widely considered the most aesthetically impressive prize in the Majors, the "Sultan of Swat Award," commonly referred to as the Babe Ruth Crown. Hobby insiders will recall the recent sale of Williams' personal example of this prize at auction for $230,000 just a year ago, and we must clarify that this is a different model, created some years later for display at the headquarters of the issuing body. The few physical differences between the original and this later incarnation are minor however, and the lengthy text that runs the perimeter of the crown is identical:

"Babe Ruth Sultan of Swat Award, Presented to Ted Williams For Outstanding Batting Achievements, 1957, Maryland Professional Baseball Players Assoc., All Star Game, Batting Avg. .388, Home Runs 38, Runs 96, R.B.I. 87, At Bats 420, Hits 163, 2 Base 28, 3 Base 1, Fielding Avg. .995."

A few very minor scratches are apparent upon close inspection, but our catalog photography should properly illustrate that the effect is so minor as to enter the realm of overstatement by the simple mention. In every regard--historically, aesthetically--this is a piece fit for a king.

*A donation of $100 to the American Red Cross is required to attend the Live auction.
