Description:
1952 Bill Veeck Trophy Presented by St. Louis Brown Teams Upon Firing of Rogers Hornsby. "He was a real hard-nosed guy," reported author Anthony J. Connor in his book Voices from Cooperstown. "He ran the clubhouse like a Gestapo camp. You couldn't smoke, drink a soft drink, eat a sandwich. Couldn't read a paper. When you walked in the clubhouse you put your uniform on and got ready to play. That was it! No more kidding around, no joking, no laughing." The most hated manager in baseball, Rogers Hornsby was so infamously cruel that he was even referenced by Tom Hanks during his famous "There's no crying in baseball!" rant in the film "A League of Their Own." So when team owner Bill Veeck answered his players' prayers and dismissed the surly Hall of Famer, he was gratefully presented with this trophy cup reading, "To Bill Veeck, For the greatest play since the Emancipation Proclamation, June 10, 1952, From the players of the St. Louis Browns." The sterling silver loving cup measures fourteen inches in height and presents very well despite the detachment of one arm at the top, which could certainly be soldered back into place quite easily. A few minor dents seem only appropriate given the circumstances of its presentation and its fun-loving recipient. Included is a vintage news photograph of the trophy presentation, with wide smiles all around. We learn from this photo that the Bakelite base and lid have been lost to the passing decades, but the most important cup itself thankfully survives here.
