1934 New York Chapter Baseball Writers' Association Award Presented to Walter Johnson....
The raised text of the sterling silver plate tells the tale, so we'll transcribe it here:
"New York Chapter Baseball Writers' Association, to Walter Johnson, In recognition of his services to baseball, his standing as a pitcher and reputation as a sportsman, 1934 Award."
A wonderful and remarkably accurate portrait of the Big Train is etched at center, with the edges decorated by a flurry of laurel and crossed bats. Inclusive of the wooden backing, the award measures 13.5x17" in dimension. Included is a marvelous 8x10" period news photograph of Johnson posing with this award, his right arm around fellow ace Carl Hubbell, an honoree who would follow his elder into the Baseball Hall of Fame thirteen years later. The plaque exhibits minor tarnishing which could be easily counteracted if desired, but otherwise presents without any distractions worthy of note. A wonderful keepsake with endless aesthetic appeal and the most ironclad provenance possible. Vintage photograph of Johnson with award is included. Letter of provenance from Walter Johnson's daughter & grandson.
