Description:
1923 New York Yankees World Championship Pocket Watch--The First Yankees Championship Award! Hold onto your Yankee top hats, as this is one of the most exciting artifacts to surface in recent memory from the twenty-seven World Championship seasons in Bronx history. The pocket watch offered here represents the spoils of war from the very first World Series victory, presented to traveling secretary Mark Roth, a former sportswriter generally credited for coining the "Yankees" nomenclature when writing about the exploits of the New York Highlanders, a name which stuck when the team relocated from Hilltop Park to the Polo Grounds in 1913.

It must be stressed that the Championship ring is a later phenomenon, and that this pocket watch is the 1923 equivalent. And it's a gorgeous piece of art at that, a fourteen-karat gold octagonal open-face beauty by Gruen-Verithen. The case's verso is masterfully engraved with a miniature scene of a pitcher, hitter and catcher, and a ball in flight in their midst. Framing the scene are the historic words, "Yankees, World's Champions 1923." The case snaps open to find further engraving inside, which reads, "Presented by Yankees Baseball Club to Mark Roth."

Dial exhibits mild soiling and crystal is chipped at two o'clock position, but the case itself remains free of any noteworthy condition distractions. The watch does not appear to be functioning currently, but we expect it would be a simple matter for a trained horologist to revive its ticking pulse.
