Description:
1920 Cleveland Indians American League Champions Pennant. It was a season of tragedy and joy in Cleveland in 1920. In mid-August, shortstop Ray Chapman was struck by a Carl Mays fastball to the skull and never regained consciousness, dead at age twenty-nine. But six weeks later, still wearing black armbands at their left sleeves in memory of their fallen comrade, the Tribe would vanquish the Brooklyn Dodgers to claim the franchise's first ever World Championship. Presented here is a phenomenally scarce felt pennant sold at League Park during the first World Series in Cleveland, very possibly on hand to see player/manager Tris Speaker and the gang clinch the Classic with a three to nothing victory on their home turf. The glorious aesthetics of the pennant are wonderfully evocative of the age, a detailed Native American at left gazing upon the words "1920 Cleveland, American League Champions" narrowing to the tip of the ancient felt relic. While the pennant does exhibit a degree of wear one would expect for a textile approaching its ninetieth anniversary, with a scattering of tack holes, color fading and soiling, our catalog imagery should properly indicate that the aesthetics remain strong. The tassels at left are tied but appear complete. Length is 26".
