Description:
1876 Muller Decorative Baseball Clock with Cartwright & Chadwick Imagery. Absolutely spectacular relic is definitively dated to the year of the National League's birth by its appearance in the 1876 catalog for the American Clock Company, the firm which released baseball's most collectible 19th century timepiece. The clock is named for its creators, brothers Nicholas and Karl Muller, who achieved great fame for their figural clocks, and Karl specifically for a series of 1868 baseball figures.

This piece is particularly noteworthy, however, as it represents the very earliest production piece of any format to celebrate the history of the sport of baseball and its most noteworthy pioneers, Alexander Cartwright and Henry Chadwick. That's the illustrious pair in figural relief beneath the circular clock at center, each recognizable by his distinctive facial hair. The two standing figures that frame the scene are widely recognized as Bob Ferguson, outfielder and manager of the Brooklyn Atlantics, and Bobby Mathews, star pitcher of the New York Mutuals. The children at top are thought to represent the future of the game.

Any condition concerns are minor in light of the fantastic shape of the iron and wood masterpiece, which presents in splendid NRMT fashion, excepting the toning of the clock dial. The clock has been confirmed as functional. It is certainly among the finest of the ten or so known surviving specimens, and will serve as a cornerstone of even the most impressive early baseball collections. Dimensions 13x16x4".
