1986 Jim Deshaies Record Eighth Strike Out to Open a Game Baseball. The Los Angeles Dodgers could tell September 23, 1986 was going to be a long day as Houston Astros pitcher Jim Deshaies retired their first eight batters on strikes, setting a Major League record which remains unbroken to this day. Presented is the ONL (Feeney) ball used to retire that eighth batter, outfielder Jose Gonzalez, to set the dominating mark. Ball exhibits solid use and is autographed by Deshaies on the sweet spot. On the panel below, he writes, "8 consecutive strike-outs to start a game, 9-23-86." Ink rates 8.5/10. Included is a letter detailing the acquisition of the ball from Houston Astros equipment manager Vince Jarero in 1991. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA (autograph). Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication (autograph).
