Description:
1915 Cracker Jack Christy Mathewson #88 SGC 96 Mint 9. A dream will come true for one sophisticated collector here, as Heritage presents one of the most remarkable E145-2 Cracker Jack cards to be placed upon the auction block in recent memory. Those with even a passing knowledge of the baseball collectibles can appreciate the scarcity and desirability of any Mint condition Mathewson baseball card. Mathewson's illustrious career was largely cemented in history by the time this card came to market. His career earned Matty a well justified place in Cooperstown's inaugural class of five legends of the game. A hero off the field as well, Christy's death by pneumonia in 1925 was the delayed result of a poisonous gas attack occurring during his service in World War I . Issued only a year shy of his retirement from professional baseball, the multi-colored portrait is of a very young Mathewson, printed with a alarmingly high degree of precision. His image and surrounding flawless red field are interrupted only by the "Cracker Jack BALL PLAYERS" tag line is centered about as perfect as could possibly be. The borders are bright and fresh, the back is a strong strike resulting in fully legible lettering. To be critical beyond the point of reason we will add there are micro print dots within the white frame and a few on the reverse. If one passes on this card for that reason the lucky winner will be eternally grateful. Do we even need to add this is the highest graded example known? Stunning Mint condition.
