Description:
1887 Chas. Gross & Co. Four Base Hits Pete Gillespie SGC 10 Poor 1. From the Carolinas collection. It is every vintage card collectors dream to read the phrase "Smoke Four Base Hits, Four for 10 Cents" on a baseball card they have in hand. For the passionate who pursue this rarest of 19th Century editions, their lack of availability has amore "infamous" than famous feeling. It is amazing the wonderment generated by these 2-3/16x3-3/4" real photo cards. New discoveries are few and far between, new finds in the last forty years can be counted on one hand. This card of New York Giants Left Fielder Pete Gillespie hasn't basked in the glow of public auction/sale for over three decades and another has not been offered since! They are that rare. Gillespie played for eight seasons from 1880-1887 for the Troy Trojans and the Giants. He won't make the HoF but he was a solid .276 lifetime hitter. PSA and SGC have graded a total of 15 cards, this is the only entry for Gillespie. Graded SGC 10 Poor 1, the card has missing corners. Remnants of tack holes are proof the card was once on proud display. The blank reverse has light soiling and surface roughness in areas. The front image has faded but the regal gaze of the Giants outfielder is clearly visible.
