Description:
1933 Goudey Babe Ruth #144 SGC 88 NM/MT 8. By 1933, Babe Ruth was well-established as one of the game's all-time greatest and he enjoyed worldwide fame. The Goudey Gum Company -- the first American manufacturer to issue baseball cards with each stick of gum -- took full advantage of this fact, opportunistically featuring Ruth on no less than four cards in its initial 240-piece effort. The '33 Goudey set is rightfully viewed as a consummate masterpiece, with gorgeous portraiture capturing many of the greatest names of the National Pastime's pre-World War II era. Certainly there were none greater than Babe Ruth, who strikes his classic, full-length batting pose here on what may be the set's most recognizable card. Brilliant color and flawless registration brings the Babe to life more than three-quarters of a century after this collectible's release, and the offered example's truly remarkable freedom from wear defies all logic.
Graded SGC 88 NM/MT 8, this card is one of seven at the NM/MT level with four grading higher. Brilliant color and flawless surfaces bring the Babe to life eight decades after issue. A minor shift in vertical centering and the slightest corner touches are all we can report when pressed to find any variation from perfection. If one was told he/she had to sell their treasured vintage card collection but you could keep just one card... we wonder how many would keep their 1933 Goudey card #144?
