1925 Hughie Jennings Handwritten Signed Letter. Having met in 1893 as teammates on Ned Hanlon's Baltimore Orioles, Jennings and fellow Hall of Fame manager John McGraw quickly became the closest of friends, with Jennings even serving as McGraw's best man at his 1897 wedding, and a pallbearer at his wife's funeral just two years later following her tragic death from a burst appendix. After stepping down as the Detroit Tigers manager following the 1920 season, Jennings stepped into the Polo Grounds dugout for seventy-six games of the 1924 and 1925 seasons when his friend McGraw fell ill and was unable to serve.

It was during this second season that Jennings penned this single affectionate page to a journalist who had written a recent article about him. He mentions his ailing friend and the team he was guiding in his absence, writing, "Mac has been quite sick for three weeks confined to bed. I saw him last night and he is improving. The team has been going good and only hope it keeps up. The Tigers don't seem able to get started. Better get busy soon or they will be out of the race." The letter is penned on Giants team letterhead, with all ink rating a spectacular 9+/10. A single drop of water has caused three letters to bleed their ink, to no significant detriment. The closing signature, "Hugh Jennings," is flawless. The page exhibits original mailing folds, otherwise NRMT. A stamp on verso applied by the addressee dates receipt to "May 19, 1925." The intense rarity of a handwritten Jennings letter--the first we've ever handled--matched with the fantastic baseball content should place this firmly on the radar of any advanced baseball autograph collector.
