1896 Spyridon "Spyros" Louis Signed Cut Signature--Winner of First Modern Olympic Marathon. It was the brainchild of Frenchman Michel Breal, who was inspired by the legend of messenger Phidippides, who had run from the town of Marathon to Athens to announce the Athenian victory in the Battle of Marathon. In this first edition of the modern Olympics, the nation of Greece was intent upon claiming this victory for themselves as a point of national pride. Louis became the most famous man in Greece with his victory, offered by the King any gift he could dream to ask. His request: a donkey-drawn carriage for his water-carrying business. Presented is an exceedingly rare example of his signature, appearing to have been signed the year of his heroic achievement due to the "1896" notation. His fountain pen ink is 9/10 on the unlined 1.25x3.75" cut. Please note: PSA/DNA has ruled "inconclusive" on this lot due to lack of exemplars. Please bid accordingly.
