Description

1931 Ellsworth Vines Handwritten Letter with Bill Tilden Content. Magnificent content in this four-page letter (two sheets of "The Lenox, Boston" hotel letterhead, front and back), which begins with a tale of fighting back from two sets down and two separate match points to win in a tournament. But the biggest news comes in his report to his wife-to-be of a meeting with a legend. "Have been talking to Tilden lately, and he's sort of angling for me to turn pro. Says something about $10,000 for one year, and all expenses. It sounds like a great deal honey, and it would mean a lot to us, but I'm a little skeptical of the offer..." The letter is signed, "Always your lover, Ellsworth" and all ink is 9+/10. Pages exhibit original mailing folds but no other flaws. Original mailing envelope (unsigned) is here as well. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA.

The Ellsworth Vines Collection

The greatest figure of Depression-era tennis, the lanky but heavy-hitting Vines was assigned the title of "greatest tennis player ever" by none other than the legendary Bill Tilden, who makes the assertion in a signed photograph offered as part of the remarkable collection to follow. In four separate tennis seasons of the 1930's, Vines was ranked number one, either alone or jointly, and the tangible evidence of that dominance appears in these pages. The collection comes to us from Vines' son, Ellsworth Vines III, and makes its hobby debut in this auction. Each lot will be accompanied by a signed letter of provenance from the son of this superior athlete.
