The only known single from the tragic Murderer's Row ace
1923 Urban Shocker Single Signed Baseball. In the first five years of the Lively Ball Era (1920-24), it was this man who led all Major League pitchers in victories, a feat made all the more remarkable by the fact that the record was accomplished as a member of the lackluster St. Louis Browns. However it was Shocker's service to the New York Yankees for which the oddly-named right-hander is best remembered, posting a remarkable eighteen and six record for the fabled 1927 World Champions in his last full season of employment. After making a single appearance for the 1928 Yankees, Shocker's declining health precipitated his release from the club. Just over three months later, Shocker was dead at age thirty-seven.

Presented is the only single signed baseball from this superstar spitballer known to exist, a splendid high-grade relic dating to the season after Shocker displaced the great Walter Johnson from his perpetual position atop the American League strikeout ladder. His childlike script fills the sweet spot of an Official American League (Johnson) sphere, underscored by his personal notation of "Browns 1923" on the southern panel. Shocker's black fountain pen ink projects at a conservative 7/10, and the ball itself boasts bold, dark stamping and just a hint of light, inconsequential toning. Original box (VG-EX) included.

The first in a list of notable Yankees to perish far too soon--Miller Huggins, Lou Gehrig, Thurman Munson--Urban Shocker may trail in name recognition among modern fans, but none of these Bronx legends offers such a fierce challenge to modern autograph collectors. So take a good look look at this Shocker single, because there's every reason to believe that you'll never have the chance again. Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Full LOA from James Spence Authentication.

*A donation of $100 to the American Red Cross is required to attend the Live auction.
