Description:
1913 Chicago Cubs Team Signed Baseball. Yes, you read the title correctly. If you're a little shocked to find a team signed baseball just short of its centennial bearing signatures averaging a conservative "8" on a scale of ten, you're definitely not alone. A conscientiously applied coating of shellac and many decades of unmolested solitude account for what may be the most well-preserved team ball to predate the first World War ever made available at public auction. Passed down through generations of a single family, and making its hobby debut, the presented artifact is a study in superlatives.

Early Hall of Famers John Evers and Roger Bresnahan anchor a full roster of twenty-six signatures on this boldly stamped ONL (Lynch) sphere. Among these is the spectacularly rare sweet spot signature of Charles W. Murphy, the former sportswriter who puchased the team in 1906 and directed the club to its only two World Championship seasons in 1907 and 1908. Other notables include starting first baseman Vic Saier, shortstop Al Bridwell, third baseman Heine Zimmerman, outfielders Frank Schulte and Mike Mitchell, and pitchers Jimmy Lavender and Ed Reulbach. Though the team had shed much of its legendary figures in the years since its consecutive World Championships, the presented ball features more members of those 1907-08 squads than any we've thus far encountered. As such, this will surely rank among the most important Chicago Cubs artifacts to reach the auction block in 2009. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication.
