Heritage Sports Collectibles to Offer Historic Len Bias Collection

DALLAS, TEXAS: Heritage Sports Collectibles (HSC) will offer the most significant collection of memorabilia ever assembled from the tragically short life of University of Maryland basketball superstar Len Bias in their upcoming October 29, 2005 Signature Auction.

Bias, whose dominance of NCAA basketball earned him the honor of becoming the second overall pick in the 1986 NBA draft, died of a drug overdose just two days after being chosen by the fabled Boston Celtics. The tale shocked and saddened not just the sporting world, but the American public at large, for whom Bias would become a cautionary tale and the face of the country's drug epidemic.

Almost two decades later, HSC will offer for the first time a selection of artifacts from the last days of this uniquely gifted athlete, each acquired directly from the Bias family and accompanied by letters of authenticity signed by Len's father and mother James and Lonise Bias.

"We are honored and humbled to be given the opportunity to present this incredible material to the collecting community," said Chris Ivy, director of HSC. "Bias is one of American sports' saddest tales of unrealized potential, a terrific athlete and person who could have been one of the all-time greats."

The Boston Celtics clearly had high hopes for this skilled power forward, presenting Bias with a jersey and cap at the NBA draft, which can be seen with Len in the hundreds of photographs flooding the newspapers following his death. This jersey and cap will be offered in the HSC October Signature Auction. Also offered will be the distinctive suit and the tie worn by Bias that night just two days before his death.

Other pieces in the Len Bias Collection include his game worn shoes as a member of the University of Maryland Terrapins, and Celtic green Chuck Taylor sneakers given as a gift to Bias by Hall of Famer Larry Bird.

HSC specializes in rare and collectible sports cards, as well as uniforms, equipment, and related vintage sports memorabilia.
