Heritage Sports Collectibles Auction Posts Magnificent Results!

Dallas, TX: Heritage Auction Galleries held its latest Sports Collectibles Signature Auction on Saturday, May 5, 2007, in Dallas, Texas. The auction realized $2,533,687 for 997 lots, although after-auction sales are still ongoing and are expected to push the total even higher.

"Once again it was Babe Ruth taking the top spot in our auction," explained Chris Ivy, Director of Sports Auctions for Heritage Auction Galleries. "The contract addendum Yankees owner Jake Ruppert forced him to sign in an attempt to limit the Babe's drinking and late nights realized $65,725. This is a particularly noteworthy result as the piece had failed to meet a $40,000 reserve with a major New York City auction house in June 2005."

A gorgeous pre-war flannel from relative unknown Detroit Tigers pitcher Bert Cole was perhaps the biggest surprise of the auction, realizing approximately ten times its admittedly conservative estimate with a price of $47,800. "A result such as this illustrates the benefits of selling through Heritage," noted Ivy. "When an auction house has a bidding clientele dozens of times larger than its closest competitors, magical things can happen."

Other highlights of the auction included:

Mid-1960's Ray Nitschke Game Worn Jersey.
PRICE REALIZED: $38,837.

"This was our strongest football auction to date," said Ivy. "Bidders fell in love with this jersey particularly, though, for the fantastic combination of Hall of Fame pedigree and brutal game use."

1985 Dan Marino Super Bowl XIX Game Worn Helmet.
PRICE REALIZED: $33,460.

"This was another remarkable result from our football offerings," said Ivy. "We believe that the price paid for this helmet ranks as second only to a 1960's Johnny Unitas example sold back in 2002. It's certainly the highest price ever realized for a helmet worn in the modern era."

1939 Lou Gehrig Handwritten Signed Letter Discussing His Illness.
PRICE REALIZED: $31,070.

"Here's another record result to add to the Heritage trophy wall," noted Ivy. "Prior to this auction, the best price ever realized for a Gehrig handwritten letter was $23,000. That record was obliterated by this remarkable and previously unknown treasure."

Circa 1927 Babe Ruth & Lou Gehrig Signed Baseball.
PRICE REALIZED: $33,460.

"Very few specimens of this highly collectible dual-signed ball have reached the level realized by ours. No other auction house on earth posts such consistently strong results for Ruth and Gehrig autographs as Heritage does," said Ivy.

1962 Topps Baseball High Grade Complete Set (598).
PRICE REALIZED: $28,680.

"High-end cards continued to post wonderful results in our Signature Auction," noted Ivy. "This gorgeous offering ranks among the most expensive 1962 Topps Baseball sets ever sold in the hobby."
