Description:

1936-37 New York Giants Granger Tobacco Advertising Sign. The uniform style worn by Giants catcher Harry "the Horse" Danning allows us to definitively date this fine die-cut sign to the exact era of back-to-back pennants for the Polo Grounds residents. Phenomenal artwork is reminiscent of the style utilized by the top pin-up artists of the day, an intriguing blend of photo-realism and bold Madison Avenue graphics. The piece is constructed of three-dimensional cardboard--the cigarette pack and smaller pipe are set on top of the larger back piece. Entire dimensions of the sign are 26x32". Wear at the edges is evident, with mild water staining, and the bowl of the pipe has been reattached. A single crease runs vertically the length of the sign about eight inches from the left edge. The sign still displays marvelously well despite these minor considerations. Framed to final size of 29x36".
